SEO what?
What is SEO and Why is it important?

SEO is an abbreviation of Search Engine Optimisation and is the process of improving your website’s ranking in search engines.

With more and more companies competing on the World Wide Web, companies develop, write and launch websites as a part of their marketing and promotion. But if the website is not found, by a company’s target audience it will not promote the company effectively or if at all.

The search engines use certain criteria to list companies in order of appropriateness. Search Engine Optimisation takes into consideration the way in which the search engines “read” the website. By optimising the website this encourages the Search Engines to read the website frequently and favorably. The more a website is found, the more visitors it has.

There are no guarantees and lots of conflicting information concerning SEO. However, if certain criteria or rules are followed together with some effort, you will stand a better chance of gaining a good ranking with the search engines.

The higher the website is in ranking the more likely a business is to be found. Users of the internet will not look on the 6th page to find a website, when the first website gives the user the information, service or product they require.

If prospective clients cannot find you, they cannot order or buy anything from you.

How does a website get listed by a search engine?
In order for the search engines to give the most appropriate website for the search term used, Google reads the website and then lists the most appropriate website positioned at the top of the page and then the second, third, fourth etc. The place where a website appears in the list is called ranking.

Google “reads” each website by using automated software that send out spiders and robots which collect information from each individual websites.

Robots and spiders will then follow links on the pages they find to gather information. It then stores this information in the search engine database.

Search engines are then able to respond to a “search term” immediately as they already have information stored on each website.

When a “user” of the internet puts a search term in Google such as “Mobile Phone” you may notice there are many hundreds of pages with thousands of websites listed.

What do the search engines “read”?
The search engines read the content of the website. As a website is built (if built correctly) the search engines will look at various sections of a web document for repeating patterns of keywords and phrases.

Search engines look at sites to deliver the most apt site to the person searching.
