Graphic Design - When a picture paints a thousand words!
Throughout the development of the human race, graphic design and imagery have been used to communicate complex ideas, to store knowledge, bring order and clarity to information. This has aided the transfer of knowledge between humans, and provided a kind of social commentary to a past era, even those living centuries apart can have an insight into the society and thinking at the time.

Great graphic design can get a complex message across quickly and psychologically connect with the target audience, stimulating a basic human need, an emotion, re-evaluation of beliefs or inspiring new ideas.

Design Influence
Every day we are bombarded with graphics and images that tell us what to do, get a message across, allow us to learn, influence our decision making, decorate, evoke a feeling or connection, form relationships… The list just gets longer, the more you think about it.

When you first think about the influence of graphic design you initially think of graphic design within an advert being used to sell a product.

However, the use of graphic design within every society has an influence from an early age, imagine learning your abc’s without the obligatory a is for apple, b is for bird, learning flash cards, revision books or driving without any road warning signs.

It is important for graphic design to communicate with the masses, irrespective of the target audiences upbringing, education or personality. It is therefore important for a graphic designer to have a good understanding of marketing, modern trends and society as a whole.

Graphics and Politics
Graphic design has been used throughout recent history to convey political messages to the masses. These images changed history and still haunting today. Here are just a few examples:
"Want You for the Army" Poster
Rosie the Riveter "We Can Do It" Poster
Che Guevara – Adopted as a symbol for rebellion
Barack Obama "HOPE" Poster

Thought provoking design can shape the world around us and define an era in history. Design influences trends, fashion and a generation's thinking of the world. Pick up a magazine produced 20 years ago and you will be able to tell that it is dated and older in its design styling, even someone with no experience, interest or creativity will be able to “date” a design style.

Think of how art deco, renaissance or expressionist art can be immediately attributed to an era. However, mixes of these styles and influences are around us today and often these styles become socially popular again.

Graphic design uses art and imagery, words and symbols to create a visual representation of an idea or message.
